NLCS Singapore Grade 11 student Saket Subramaniam has had his independent research paper published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Student Research, marking a notable academic achievement within the school’s Senior School community.
The paper, titled “The Correlation Between the Surgical Margin and Survival in Patients with Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, examines how the extent of healthy tissue removed during liver tumour surgery may influence survival outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer liver metastasis. The research focuses on a significant area within surgical oncology and reflects a level of academic enquiry beyond standard classroom study.
Saket developed the project independently under the guidance of Huairen Zhang, a PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge. His work involved the use of meta-analysis, a statistically rigorous research method that draws conclusions from existing studies and is rarely undertaken at student research level.
This achievement highlights the research culture developing within NLCS Singapore’s Senior School, where students are encouraged to pursue subject-specific enquiry, engage with complex academic questions and extend their learning beyond the classroom.
