XCL World Academy has appointed Maria Sweeney as its new Head of School, beginning the next chapter in the school’s leadership and long term development.
Maria moves into the position after serving as XWA’s Early and Primary Years Principal, where she played an important role in strengthening the student experience and advancing the school’s approach to personalised and future focused education.
She brings more than 36 years of experience in education, including 17 years within international schools. Throughout her career, Maria has held senior positions including Head of School, Director of Curriculum and Principal at schools in Rome, California and New York City. Her experience across different educational systems and international communities has shaped a leadership approach grounded in collaboration, innovation and the individual needs of students.
During her time leading XWA’s Early and Primary Years division, Maria contributed to the continued development of the school’s strategic vision. She also supported the introduction and growth of initiatives designed to connect classroom learning with real world experiences and the skills students will need beyond school.
These include Little Xplorers, an experiential learning programme for younger students, and Xpeditions, which extends learning beyond the classroom during the Primary Years. The school has also developed XCLerate, a future skills programme incorporating areas such as creative arts, global citizenship, community action, artificial intelligence, financial literacy and leadership.
As Head of School, Maria will oversee XWA’s academic direction and wider school community while continuing to develop a personalised learning environment in which students are encouraged to aspire, act and grow.
Speaking about her appointment, Maria described it as a privilege to build on the foundations already established at XWA. She also expressed her commitment to working closely with students, families and staff to provide a future focused education and create a community in which every learner can thrive.
The appointment forms part of a planned leadership transition at the school. Maria succeeds Tammy Murphy, who served as Head of School for three years and led a period of growth, academic development and investment in educational innovation.
With an established understanding of XWA’s students, educators and community, Maria’s appointment provides continuity while bringing her extensive leadership experience to the school’s next phase of development.
